Do you get your workout clothes on, your workout space ready, and allow someone or something to take you away? Are you beating yourself up because you missed one, maybe two sessions?
Doing the exercises is the hard part, so it takes very little effort to skip your workout. Procrastination gets us every time. It creeps up slowly, effortlessly, letting other commitments come first.
Have you become even more critical about your body, and yourself, because you haven’t been working out regularly? I bet you let guilt accompany the procrastination, talking yourself into believing you’re being selfish to put your needs before someone or something else.
But you deserve time for yourself. You really do. And you know you will feel better and think and move better for having completed your workout, and be more energized to fulfill your other commitments.
Do you even like your workouts? Playing your style of music helps, but do you waste workout time by choosing music? Maybe you need a personal trainer. Having one watch you, call out adjustments or track reps keeps you from thinking about what torture exercise is (or how you imagine it is).
The right personal trainer for you may not be the best one for your friend, and that’s OK. You need to feel comfortable with your trainer, mentally, physically, and emotionally. When you contract with a personal trainer you should feel comfortable with them, that they have your best interest at heart, and is designing your workout specifically for you. When you decide to invest money in your exercise regimen, there should be an inherent commitment, on your part as well as your trainer, to be ready and available at the designated time. This relationship requires teamwork to be successful.
Having a beautiful workout area with mirrors and equipment you like to use is very helpful, but you still have to remember the exercises and all the pieces to the correct form and the number of repetitions and what to do next. You probably need to stop a moment to look and/or feel the adjustment to ensure yourself that you have it right, but this interrupts any flow you had, which means more work to get back into it.
Hiring a professional, experienced trainer who can note the specific ways you are (or are not) moving your body to achieve proper form is invaluable. They can call out adjustments while you are executing each exercise, so you can make those adjustments quickly and not have to think of them yourself — or wonder if you’re doing it right.
What if you could have a trainer right there with you, on your phone or iPad, watching you and talking to you while you’re exercising?
